Sound familiar?

A normal week for you

  • Your manager pings at 7 pm. You type "Sure!" before you've finished reading.
  • The society group needs a volunteer. Nobody answers for an hour, so you do.
  • Your mother asks for your one free Saturday. "Haan Ma, of course."
  • Eight relatives for Sunday lunch. You say yes, and your chest goes heavy.
  • Sunday night, exhausted, you wonder why you can't just say no.

It isn't a personality flaw. It's a trauma response. Your body learned a long time ago that yes was the safe answer, and it never stopped. That's why no doesn't feel like a choice. It feels almost criminal, like you're breaking a rule nobody ever said out loud.

Inside the workbook

First you understand. Then you change it.

This isn't a list of tips. The workbook takes you through it in an order, the same way I work with my clients. We start by understanding why yes is your default. Only once that makes sense do we bring in your own life.

  1. Before you beginHow to use this workbook, and who I am

How to make the best use of it, and why I do this work.

  2. Part one · Understanding the reflex to say yesWhy yes is your default, and why no feels almost criminal

Chapters 1 and 2. Why your yes is a trauma response, not a personality flaw. Then the five ways your body keeps you safe: fight, flight, freeze, fawn and fix. You'll find your order, and the need underneath it.

  3. Part two · Uncovering your core patternFind the rule underneath your yes

Chapters 3 to 9. Now that you understand it, you bring in one real yes from your own life, and we pull it apart together with my signature method, Pull the red strip™: fact, story, feeling, action and the question that opens it all up. At the bottom is your Operating Rule, the one sentence that has been running your life.

  4. Part three · Undoing the patternWhat to do about it

Chapters 10 and 11. 3 hacks for the very next time someone asks. Then the four places your rule came from: childhood, your birth story, your time in the womb, and the women before you.

  5. ClosingYour core pattern, in one place

Everything you've uncovered, brought together on one page. Download your filled-in workbook as a PDF, and if you want to go deeper, book a one-on-one session with me.

About me

Hi, I'm Devlina

I spent ten years in events, being the person who said yes to everything, until my body gave up before I was ready to admit anything was wrong. I'm the eldest daughter, so I had plenty of material.

My inability to say no cost me all four of the things I talk about now: my sense of self, my relationships, my career opportunities and my health.

What changed it wasn't learning to say no. It was understanding that this wasn't something to blame myself for. It was a trauma response. Once I started working with it that way, I could finally prioritise myself. I met my real self. I stopped being a side character in my own life.

Your yes was once a survival skill. It never got the message that you survived.

Since then I've spent more than 1000 hours in one-on-one sessions with women who couldn't say no. Different cities, different jobs, same pattern. And underneath it, every single time, a reason that made complete sense.

This workbook is the first part of how I work with my clients, written so you can do it yourself.
